The Currency Your Cells Are Running Out Of
Nothing Alive Is Free
In 1944 a physicist named Erwin Schrodinger, who had already broken quantum mechanics open and was apparently bored, wrote a short book asking a question physicists were not supposed to ask. What is life? His answer has never really been improved on. Everything in the universe slides toward disorder. Heat spreads out, structures collapse, differences flatten. A living thing is a pocket of the universe that runs the other way, holding itself in an exquisitely improbable arrangement, and it can only do that by continuously paying for it.
You are, in the most literal thermodynamic sense, an ongoing purchase. Every second you remain organized rather than dispersed is bought with energy, and the payment never pauses. Sleep does not pause it. Stillness does not pause it. The moment the payments stop, the arrangement you think of as yourself begins coming apart on schedule, because that is what the universe does to anything that stops paying.
This is not a grim thought once you sit with it. It reframes the whole question of aging. If being alive is a transaction, then decline is not a mysterious curse written into the fabric of things. It is an accounting problem. And accounting problems, unlike curses, have the interesting property of being the kind of thing you can actually go look at.
The Ledger, Not The Fuel
Here is where almost everyone gets it wrong, including a lot of people selling things. NAD, nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide, is not fuel. It is not an energy drink at the molecular level. Calling it a battery or a power source sounds satisfying and it will make you misunderstand everything that follows.
NAD is a carrier. Specifically it is an electron shuttle, flipping between two states, NAD and NADH, picking up electrons from one reaction and dropping them off at another. When you break down glucose, when your mitochondria run the citric acid cycle, when the electron transport chain finally produces the ATP that actually powers your cells, NAD is the thing physically ferrying the charge between steps. It is not the money. It is the ledger the money is written on, and it is present in essentially every cell of every living thing on this planet, which tells you roughly how early and how permanently life settled on this solution.
It was found in 1906, by two researchers studying why yeast fermentation stalled, who noticed some small heat stable factor in the mix that the process could not proceed without. They called it cozymase. It took decades to work out that this obscure yeast helper was one of the central molecules of metabolism, sitting underneath nearly every energy transaction in the biosphere. Most of the deep machinery of life was discovered this way, as an inconvenience in someone else's experiment.
The Molecule That Gets Spent
If NAD only shuttled electrons, this article would end here, because a shuttle gets reused forever and never runs down. What makes NAD interesting, and what makes it a currency rather than a tool, is that a whole set of enzymes do not borrow it. They consume it. They cleave the molecule apart to do their work, and the fragments have to be rebuilt.
Three consumers matter. The sirtuins, a family of enzymes that strip chemical tags off proteins and are tangled up in how cells manage stress and metabolism, cannot function without spending NAD. The PARPs, which mobilize when DNA is damaged, consume it aggressively during repair, and the more damage accumulates the more they take. And CD38, an enzyme on cell surfaces involved in immune signaling, chews through NAD steadily, with expression that tends to climb as tissue ages and inflammation builds.
So the picture is not a static pool. It is a flow. Cells continuously rebuild NAD through what is called the salvage pathway, recycling the fragments back into working molecules, with an enzyme called NAMPT acting as the bottleneck on how fast that can happen. Production on one side, consumption on the other, and a balance between them that is not guaranteed to stay favorable.
The Slow Blackout
Across a wide range of studies and organisms, that balance shifts the wrong way with age. Measured NAD levels in many tissues fall as animals get older, and human tissue work points the same direction. It is one of the more reproducible observations in the whole aging literature, which in a field this noisy is worth something.
The mechanism people find most unsettling is that it appears to feed itself. DNA damage accumulates with age, which activates more PARP activity, which consumes more NAD. Inflammatory signaling rises with age, CD38 expression climbs with it, and that consumes more NAD too. Meanwhile the sirtuins, which depend on NAD to do their part in stress response and repair, are bidding for a shrinking supply against consumers that got hungrier. Less available currency means less repair capacity, and less repair capacity means more accumulated damage, which raises consumption again.
That is a loop that tightens rather than settles. Whether it is a primary driver of aging or mostly a downstream consequence of other failures is exactly the kind of question the field has not closed, and anyone who tells you it is settled in either direction is ahead of the evidence. What is not in dispute is that the trend is real and the direction is down.
What We Actually Know
Now the part that separates honest writing about this from marketing. Because NAD cannot be usefully swallowed intact, the research attention has gone to precursors, the raw materials cells feed into the salvage pathway. Nicotinamide riboside and nicotinamide mononucleotide are the two that get the most attention, alongside older and cruder forms of vitamin B3.
Here is the honest state of it. Human trials have repeatedly shown that these precursors can raise measurable NAD levels in blood and some tissues. That part is reasonably well established. What has not been established is the part everybody actually cares about, which is whether raising that number changes how long or how well a human being lives. The rodent results are dramatic and have driven an enormous amount of excitement and product. The human results, so far, are considerably more modest, and the gap between those two things is where most of the hype in this entire sector lives.
The field has been burned here before. An earlier wave of enthusiasm around sirtuins and resveratrol produced spectacular headlines, a company acquired for a great deal of money, replication failures, and a quiet unwinding. That history should not be read as proof the underlying biology is wrong. It should be read as evidence that this specific area attracts more confidence than its data supports, repeatedly, and that the correction always arrives later than the excitement. We can move the number. Whether moving the number moves the outcome is the open question, and pretending otherwise would make us exactly the kind of source we built this journal to be an alternative to.
The Economy Of Being Alive
Step back from the biochemistry and something philosophically strange comes into focus. We tend to imagine the body as a machine, and machines fail because parts wear out. But the NAD picture describes something that behaves much more like an economy than a machine. There is a currency. There is production and consumption. There are competing claimants bidding for a limited supply, and their bids change over time. There is a balance sheet, and it can run a deficit for years before anything visible happens.
Under that frame, aging looks less like a component failing and more like an economy slowly losing the ability to fund its own maintenance. Nothing snaps. The repair budget just gets thinner every year while the repair bills get larger, and eventually the system is running so far behind on upkeep that the accumulated deferred maintenance is what you see in the mirror and feel in the morning. Death, in that reading, is not an event. It is an insolvency that finally becomes undeniable.
Nick Land liked to write about energy as the thing that actually drives history, dissipative systems tearing through resources in runaway loops, everything downstream of thermodynamics whether it admits it or not. He was writing about capital and machines. But the sharpest version of that idea is not economic and it is not technological. It is sitting inside every one of your cells right now, in a molecule discovered because it annoyed two men studying yeast, running a ledger that has never once stopped and never once been allowed to balance for free.
Reading The Meter

What is genuinely remarkable, and worth sitting with, is that the question can be asked at all. For every human being who lived before roughly the last century, the slow loss of vitality was simply weather. Unexplained, unmeasured, uninterrogable. Now there is a named molecule, a measurable level, an identified set of enzymes competing for it, and an argument about whether intervening changes anything. The argument is unresolved. But an unresolved argument is an infinitely better position than a mystery, because arguments get settled and mysteries do not.
